The School of Sanctuary team is open to all staff and students. At the moment we have students throughout year groups and the inclusion Prefects on the team as well as Sarah Jane, Rita and Aisling McGuinness. We will meet every second week, on a Wednesday at lunch time in room 1.29.
The team's goal is to add to our application to gain status as a Champion School of Sanctuary, to showcase that we are an inclusion and welcoming school for all.
Some of our plans and goals include:
Inclusive Language and Practices:
-
Commitment to Language: Include a commitment to using inclusive language in all communications. Emphasize the importance of terminology that respects diverse identities and backgrounds.
-
We are planning on visiting a local creche, to read to the students in multiple languages and our students want to pick books that feature diverse characters and storylines.
Diversity and Representation:
-
- Diverse Curriculum: Ensure the curriculum reflects a wide range of perspectives, including those from marginalized communities. This could involve incorporating literature, history, and science from diverse cultures and viewpoints.
-
Celebration of Diversity: Organize events and initiatives that celebrate cultural diversity, such as cultural days, festivals, or workshops that invite students to share their backgrounds and traditions.
-
These are things we do in the school already, through ethical education, dev ed and our school events so the team's' goal would be to highlight these things in our profile/application.
Engagement with the Community:
-
-
Community Partnerships: Develop partnerships with local organizations that advocate for diversity and inclusion. These partnerships can provide resources, workshops, and support for students and families.
-
We are currently linked with a local creche, Scoil Cormaic and Balbriggan library and would like to continue to link with the local community.
-
Promotion of Positive Relationships: Foster a school culture that emphasizes empathy, kindness, and understanding, encouraging students to support one another and build positive relationships.
Environmental Justice:
-
-
Linking Sustainability and Equity: Highlight the connection between sustainability and social justice. Address how environmental issues disproportionately affect marginalized communities and include discussions about environmental justice in the curriculum.
-
We do focus on this in Ethical education so again it would be highlighting this on our application.
