Gaeltacht

Roinn na Gaeilge are working to promote Gaeilge a living language, and are providing lots of opportunities for students to engage with the language outside of the language classroom.

Part of this is the promotion of the Gaeltacht. The Gaeltacht is the term used to refer to those areas of Ireland where the Irish language (Gaeilge) is still spoken as a community language, and its culture and traditions are very much alive and thriving. Most of these areas will have summer courses available so that 2nd level students may visit during the summer months and develop their understand of and passion for the language.

In the 2021-22 academic year, students from our TY and 5th Year cohorts are invited to attend a 3 day visit to Coláiste Bhríde in the Donegal Gaeltacht in Rann na Feirste. It is the hope of Roinn na Gaeilge that this will promote Gaeilge in the school community, as well as prepare students for Senior Cycle / their Leaving Cert Gaeilge curriculum. With 40% of the final result for Leaving Cert Gaeilge awarded for the oral examination, it is important to promote the use of this among our students before they reach 6th year.

This years trip will take place 21st-23rd February (during the mid-term break), with the hope that students will go on to attend a summer course.

We promote students attending any Gaeltacht college, however if students have any questions in regards to visiting Coláiste Bhríde again, they should contact Colleen or Danielle.
