Yellow Flag
What is the Yellow Flag?
The Yellow Flag is a flag awarded to schools by the Yellow Flag Initiative which is a practical programme that supports primary and secondary schools to become more inclusive of all cultures and all ethnicities, to celebrate diversity and challenge racism and discrimination.
Who is on the Yellow Flag Committee?
In Bremore, the whole school is involved with Yellow Flag activities. These are an authentic part of our whole school culture and involve all staff and students.
We have a committee with a range of students from all year groups who are dedicated to promoting Yellow Flag and intercultural activities in our school. The members of the 2019/2020 committee can be found on our Yellow Flag Noticeboard although we always welcome drop ins and new members. Parental involvement as well as community involvement is also important and this will become a crucial part of our Yellow Flag application.
What have the Yellow Flag Committee done so far?
The Yellow Flag committee was first set up in Bremore in 2019. We meet every Tuesday at lunchtime to plan and work on ideas and school activities. We stay connected through email and Teams.
These are some of the activities that contribute to our school promoting intercultural education and diversity:
- Annual Intercultural Day celebrations as a whole-school, including class posters on countries, quiz, Intercultural dress and fashion show, student language presenters, ethnic food from different countries, cultural music and film.
- Flag Day – special ceremony where school was presented with the Irish flag, speech on importance of flags and cultures, whole school worked on producing flags for all countries to display around school.
- European Day of Languages and student lead language workshops
- Arts Week and Yellow Flag postcards, Arts Week Posters, African Dance and African Drumming
- Cross-cultural lessons with English and Ethical Education on theme of Migration

What are the Yelllow Flag working on currently?
Students and staff on the committee are currently trying to plan something to help work towards our Yellow Flag when we return to school. This includes surveying student and parent attitudes and collating the information to form an action plan for our school going forward. Bremore prides itself on being a school rich in cultural diversity and this will always be part of what makes us special.
