What is BT Young Scientist?

BT Young Scientist is a competition centred around creating a science and technology exhibition. Students from all over Ireland enter with the aim of winning a prestigious award. It requires students to explore a scientific issue and investigate possible explanations and solutions for such issues. There are four main categories within this competition including Technology, Biological and Ecological Sciences, Social and Behavioural Sciences and Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

BT Young Scientist in Bremore ETSS

Here in Bremore ETSS, we entered five groups into the BT Young Scientist competition for 2022. We were successful with one of our applications who entered into the Social and Behavioural Sciences category. The successful students were a group of TY students – Amelia Shine, Rory Singleton and Niall King McDonnell. Their project was titled ‘what background noise is best for concentration amongst students in Bremore ETSS?’

What our students did as part of this project

The group of students mentioned above surveyed the whole school to create a sample of 30 students to engage with their investigation. They then carried out an investigation over a number of weeks to determine what effect noise had on the concentration of our students in Bremore ETSS. After analysing their results the BT Young Scientist students concluded that noise in fact hindered the concentration of students, in particular nature sounds.

Although these students did not receive an award during the awards ceremony, we are very proud of them at Bremore ETSS as they showed great commitment and determination and they were the first group from this school to be accepted to this exhibition.
