Draíocht:A place filled with magic
Draíocht. Do you know what that means? It translates to magic in English. Maybe Draíocht is a magic center. Let’s find out.
The Transition Year students of Bremore Educate Together Secondary school went for a tour to Draíocht in Blanchardstown on October 8th, 2019. We discovered that Draíocht is a multi-purpose arts and entertainment center in the heart of Blanchardstown, Dublin.
We began our tour by admiring some artworks created by artists such as Séan Molloy. There were different art pieces such as paintings, sculptures and photography. We continued the tour as Séan Molloy, a Dublin based fine art painter had the honour of teaching us the basic skills of drawing:
(1)Recognizing edges, lines and angles
(2)Reckoning proportion and perspective
(3)Deciphering shadows, highlights and gradation of tones
He enlightened us on the techniques of Giorgio Morandi, an Italian still life artist; Maarten Van Heenskerck, a Dutch portrait and religious painter; Andrew Loomis, An American artist and George Bridgman, an American- Canadian painter. We ended the tour by practicing the techniques we learnt.
So in translation, Draíocht means magic which is true as art is truly extraordinary and magical.
