Geography Awareness Week was run for the 2nd time in Bremore ETSS last week and students got to explore Geographical themes through a variety of activities and a big surprise last Friday!
Students got to take part in being citizen scientists by tracking Walrus in the Arctic, a project called "Walrus from Space" that is currently being run by the WWF and British Antarctic Survey. The aim is to identify how Walrus are being impacted by climate change. In Bremore ETSS, combined, we conducted an amazing 386 hours of research which will be used by WWF and BAS scientists to help them identify the changes in Walrus habitats and behaviours.
We currently hold Geology Club every Tuesday at lunchtime and for GeoWeek we conducted a drive to recruit new members who didn't get to take part last year due to restrictions, all new members are very welcome to the club!
We held geographical themed documentaries and several students opted to learn more about our planet during their lunchtime.
On Friday, we were delighted to be able to virtually welcome Evelyn Cusack of Met Éireann to our school! Evelyn is head of forecasting at MetÉireann and you may recognise her from RTE weather! Evelyn delivered a thoroughly engaging and inspiring talk for our students on "ancient climates, how we forecast the weather and storm names". A huge thank you to Evelyn and we hope that she will be able to visit the school in person in the future.
We ran a competition on the theme of Climate Action throughout the week with final submissions in today and we were blown away by the outstanding entries and excellence our students have shown.
We hope everyone involved enjoyed Geography Awareness Week 2021 and we look forward to running it again next year!
